Discussions about husband and wife relationships are often considered a sensitive topic, and are often considered taboo to discuss openly. In fact, Islam as a perfect religion not only regulates matters of worship, muamalah and morals, but also provides clear guidance regarding domestic life, including matters of intimate relations between husband and wife.

In the digital era like now, various information about husband and wife relationships is very easy to find through social media, short videos and articles on the internet. Unfortunately, not all of this information is correct and in accordance with Islamic teachings. As a result, various assumptions emerge that confuse the public. There are those who believe that Islam only allows one particular position during intercourse, there are also those who forbid various styles without a clear basis. On the other hand, there are also those who are too free to exceed the limits set by the Shari’a.

So, what is Islam’s actual view regarding various positions or styles in husband and wife relationships? Is everything allowed, or are there certain limitations that must be observed?

Allah SWT in the Qur’an says:

“Your women are your farm, so come to your farm as you wish.” He said, “He can come to her from wherever he wants, come or go, if it is in the private parts.”

Meaning: “Your wives are (like) the land where you cultivate, so come to the land where you cultivate however you wish. (QS. 2:223). This means that you have sex with her as you like, either from the front or the back as long as everything is towards her genitals.” (Al-Muhaddzab, Juz II/62)

This verse is the basis that Islam does not limit the form or position of husband and wife relations as long as it is carried out in a place determined by the Shari’a, namely the wife’s genitals (qubul), not the anus.

Therefore, various positions carried out by married couples are basically permitted as long as they remain within the limits permitted by religion.

The ulama explain that the aim of the Shari’a in husband and wife relationships is not only to fulfill biological needs, but also to maintain honor, domestic tranquility, and keep partners away from haram acts.

In the book Al-Fiqhul Islami wa Adillatuhu, Sheikh Wahbah Az-Zuhaily said:

Pleasure is obligatory for men and women if there is no reason, by achieving purity and protection from what is forbidden. All forms of pleasure are permitted except anal sex, which is prohibited. The place of sexual intercourse according to the agreement of the madhhab: in the front, not in the anus (1), according to the words of the Almighty: {Your women are a field for you, so come to your field as you wish} Al-Baqarah: 223/2, namely in any way: standing, or standing, approaching, or retreating, in their approach (3). Ibn Abbas said: The saying: {So take your agricultural land according to your wishes} [البقرة:223/2]. Standing, standing, coming and going, in his approach, is nothing more than that and something else. He has another expression in the verse: If you want, then come closer, and if you want, then go forward, and if you want, then be blessed. Rather, it means a place for children to cultivate the land. He said: Take tillage wherever you wish.

This means: “It is obligatory for a husband to have sexual intercourse with his wife if there is no excuse to keep it away from and protect it from what is haram, and it is permissible to have sexual intercourse in various ways as long as it is not in the anus because this is haram. The place used for ‘making love’ according to the consensus of the ulama is the genitals, not the anus, based on the words of Allah ta’aalaa: Your wives are (like) the land where you grow crops, so come to the land where you grow crops however you like. will. (QS. 2:223). This means in various ways and styles: Standing, sitting, from the front, from behind as long as the sex does not go beyond the limits of anything other than the sex. Ibn Abbas also has another statement regarding this verse “If you want a style from the front, please. If you want a style from the back, please. If you want a half-crouch style (like the position of an animal that is crouching/crouching/nungging) please, I mean specifically the place where the child is born (genitals), come with the style you like.” (Syekh Wahbah Az-Zuhaily, Al-Fiqh Islami wa Adillatuhu, [DKI: Beirut]Juz IV, p. 191)

From this explanation, it can be seen that the ulama understand this verse as the ability to have sexual relations between husband and wife in various positions as long as they do not deviate from the goals set by the Shari’a.

Husband and wife relations carried out within the framework of marriage are not something taboo, but are part of the blessings and gifts of Allah SWT which can be worth worship if carried out according to the guidance of the Shari’a.

Therefore, married couples do not need to be trapped in various myths or information that does not have a clear scientific basis. As long as the relationship is carried out in a place that is permitted by the Shari’a (vaginal opening) and does not violate the boundaries set by religion, then Islam provides ample space for couples to build harmony and happiness in the household.
